An Open Letter To
My Fellow Americans
By Michael A. Nault
The United States of America, called a “Christian” nation, and upon whose currency the words “In God We Trust” still appear. This letter is written as an appeal to the conscience of that America. We are at a crossroads and the fate of our nation hangs in the balance.
This is the most important election in our history and it is no coincidence that the economy has taken center stage. Where the heart of America truly is will be revealed at the ballot box on November fourth. We have had it too good for too long and now Americans are about to face the ultimate test. How will you vote? Where is your trust? Will you vote your cash flow or your conscience? Will you cast your ballot by fear or by faith? We in America have chosen prosperity over purity, money over morals, cash over conscience, and now God, in whom we supposedly trust, is going to use this election to demand a final answer to the question: “What’s it going to be, America?”
There are sobering parallels that can be drawn from the New Testament account of a man who was once one of Jesus’ original twelve disciples, and the current dilemma in which we find ourselves. His name was Judas Iscariot. Judas ended up betraying Jesus for thirty pieces of silver; he chose silver over the Savior. (Matt. 26:15) He walked into the Garden of Gethsemane and kissed his salvation goodbye (Matt. 26:49). And what did Judas do next? He went out and “hanged himself” (Matt. 27:5) committed self-destruction. Just prior to killing himself, Judas said these words: “I have betrayed the innocent blood” (Matt. 27:4)
The parallels are chilling. Judas was consumed with greed; not unlike America. Have we not chosen greed over God? Are we not consumed with materialism? Has not our capitalist nation been violated by corporate greed and corruption? Even among the Church’s ranks, many professing Christians have become … “men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth supposing that gain is godliness…” (1 Timothy 6:5) We have become a double-minded nation, thinking that we can serve both God and the mammon! Hear the Word of the Lord: “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one , and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” (Matt. 6:24) That is why the Bible also says that: “The love of money is the root of all evil…” (1 Timothy 6:10)
The economy may be front and center, by the world’s standards, but not according to God’s. If America falls it will not be because of the budget problem but because of the betrayal problem. Once he faced the reality of what he had done, Judas declared “I have betrayed the innocent blood” (Matt. 27:4) Herein lies another parallel between Judas and America. The root cause of America’s woes is not of a monetary but rather of a moral nature. The abortion industry in the United States is a multi-billion dollar a year business. By voting budget over babies we too will have … “betrayed the innocent blood” of the unborn.
To our shame the most dangerous place to live in the United States right now, is in the womb of an unwed mother! Every single human being on the planet earth is born with a God-given conscience. Therefore, whether one believes in God or not, we are all without excuse. However, for a professing Christian not to vote pro-life is to choose Judas over Jesus, and to kiss one’s salvation goodbye!
Finally, the one who betrayed Jesus ended up committing suicide. The same will hold true for America. If We choose silver over the Savior, we too may well self-destruct. Of far greater danger than economic “same-old, same-old”, is moral “same-old, same-old”. If we continue to favor wickedness and forget God then Psalm 9:17 will be our fate: “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.”
So what’s it going to be America?
Please examine yourself, harden not your heart and listen for the voice of your conscience, before you cast your vote.
