Opinion“Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, “The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob.” Genesis 27:41

It is that ancient. The blessing of the firstborn to inherit the land was squandered by Esau over a bowl of red lentil porridge (Genesis 25:29-34). When Esau realized his offense, he cried out in an anguish so deep that his ancestors have carried the burden for 4000 years.

To Jacob:

“May God give you heaven’s dew
    and earth’s richness—
an abundance of grain and new wine.
29 May nations serve you
and peoples bow down to you.
Be lord over your brothers,
and may the sons of your mother bow down to you.
May those who curse you be cursed
and those who bless you be blessed.” Genesis 27:28-29

To Esau:

“His father Isaac answered him,

Your dwelling will be
    away from the earth’s richness,
away from the dew of heaven above.
40 You will live by the sword
and you will serve your brother.
But when you grow restless,
    you will throw his yoke
from off your neck.Genesis 27:39-40 NIV

The first recorded heir of Esau to carry the hatred to bloodshed was Amalek, an illegitimate grandson born to Esau’s son Eliphaz and a concubine named Timna. We call Amalek “the first terrorist”.

The NIV uses Amalekites for Amalek:

“Because hands were lifted up against the throne of the Lord, the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.” Exodus 17:16 NIV

The bloodline of the Edomites and Amalekites are synonymous in their war against God

Remember what the Amalekites did to you along the way when you came out of Egypt. When you were weary and worn out, they met you on your journey and attacked all who were lagging behind; they had no fear of God.” Deuteronomy 25:17-18 NIV

The writer of Hebrews 12:16 confirms:

“See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son.” NIV

In 586 BC we find the bloodline in Israel helping the Babylonian army destroy the first temple:

“Remember, O Lord, against the sons of Edom
The day of Jerusalem,
Who said, “Raze it, raze it,
To its very foundation!” Psalm 137:7 NKJV

Obadiah records God’s anger against Edom, who is Esau (Genesis 36:1)

“For violence against your brother Jacob,
Shame shall cover you,
And you shall be cut off forever.” Obadiah 1:10

King Saul was instructed to kill all the Amalekites: men, women, children and animals, but he disobeyed and let Agag, king of the Amalekites, live:

“Now go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.” 1 Samuel 15:3

And King David tried to eradicate the Edomites:

“Then David attacked them from twilight until the evening of the next day. Not a man of them escaped, except four hundred young men who rode on camels and fled.” 1 Sam. 30:17

In the 4th century BC, the bloodline of Amalek showed up in Persia (Iran) in one named Haman:

“Then Haman said to King Ahasuerus, “There is a certain people scattered and dispersed among the people in all the provinces of your kingdom; their laws are different from all other people’s, and they do not keep the king’s laws. Therefore it is not fitting for the king to let them remain.” Esther 3:8

Esau’s descendants were in Israel at the time of Jesus:

“And a great multitude from Galilee followed Him, and from Judea and Jerusalem and Idumea and beyond the Jordan; and those from Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they heard how many things He was doing, came to Him” (Mark 3:7–8, emphasis added)

(Idumean is used by the Greeks and Romans as a reference to the descendants of Esau)

And Edom is prophesied 3 times to be present in the last days, including the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Habakkuk 3:1 prophesied that Jesus would come to Teman (capital of Edom)

Malachi 1:1-4 prophesied that Edom would be in Israel in the last days to take back the land. They would be called “The territory of wickedness”

Isaiah 63:1-3 prophesied Jesus will come against Edom whose blood will stain Jesus’ robe at His coming:

‘He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.”
