Third Wave Tsunami of Deceit: Origins

I was recently asked to take part in a series of articles with TTUF (James Fire) and Anne Kisly.  We will look at three elements of the Third Wave.  Political (James), Economic (Anne) and I will take on the Religious aspect.  As I began to go over notes and study more into depth, many of the same players kept coming to the surface.  In this first article we will look into the Origins of the Third Wave.  As we move along I will bring into view the origins, the players, agenda, influences, and prophetic implications of what I will call a cult right up front.  We will see that the shakers and movers have another gospel and another Jesus.  2 Corinthians 11:3-4

The preponderance of evidence from their sources and quotes is staggering in light of the revelation of scripture.  The over arching theme is “can we trust the bible?” or do we need “New Revelation”?  I will endeavor to painstakingly document these leaders and hold it up to the word of God.  You decide.

But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.  For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or [if] ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with [him].  2 Corinthians 11:3-4

As I began to compile the research that many other good ministries have done as we will note.  I thought, what is a good illustration that people may understand the impact of this movement.  Tsunami!  Let me illustrate this deadly phenomena.

Tsunami waves are different from the waves you can usually find rolling into the coast of a lake or ocean. Those waves are made by wind offshore and are quite small compared with tsunami waves. A tsunami wave in the open ocean can be more than 100 km across. That’s roughly the length of 1000 American football fields! Tsunami waves are huge and can travel very quickly, at about 700 km/hr, but they are only about one meter high in the open ocean.

As a tsunami wave travels into the shallower water near the coast, it slows and grows in height. Even though a tsunami may be barely visible at sea, it may grow to be many meters high near the coast and have a tremendous amount of energy. When it finally reaches the coast, a tsunami may appear as a rapidly rising or falling tide or a series of waves…. (Source)

How Tsunami Work

As you can see I think this is dangerous.  Let me explain. First the name Third Wave was coined by C Peter Wagner, a church growth guru… of Fuller Theological Cemetery.  “Term coined by the controversial church-growth specialist C. Peter Wagner in his book “The Third Wave of the Holy Spirit” (out of print). The term indicates a movement similar to – yet different from – the Pentecostal movement (First Wave) and the Charismatic movement (Second Wave).” (Source) The Third Wave is the restoration of Apostles and Prophets.   We will come back to the preposterous Dr. Wagner later in this series.

So how did all this begin?  With our tsunami illustration in mind. This is Tsunami of deceit  is the whole sale breaking away of sound doctrine unto fables.  2 Timothy 4:3-4. Here in this short passage we find specific indicator of a time (kairos) “is a fixed time, a fixed and definite time, the time when things are brought to crisis, the decisive epoch waited for.”   This is a prophecy of apostasy of “will come” ἔσομαι esomai is in the future indicative, stating this is a future event of fact!  Read the passage.

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away [their] ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.  2 Timothy 4:3-4

Gods word is so amazing.  But this is the point!  They don’t see it as amazing.  In fact not only the Third Wave, but Liberals, Emergents, Seeker, Purpose Driven and just outright rouge teachers all have broken away from sound doctrine.  Our foundation or fracture of the fault line “Sound Doctrine” and moving into the unstable waters of experience Jude 1:13.  What is unseen like our tsunami to fracture and shift away from the foundation of the bible.  There is always an effect, ripple if you will.  Indulge me for a moment.  These movements cater to the carnal nature (lusts ἐπιθυμία epithymia) of man centered theology “their own“. (This will become painfully aware as we look at those who are leading this unstable movement)  Kinda like nailing Jello to the wall!

The root cause is this “thy shall turn away” (ἀποστρέφω apostrephō) as you can see in the Greek is where we get apostasy, “The Christian understanding of apostasy is “a willful falling away from, or rebellion against, Christian truth.” (Source) It is also rendered in the future, active, indicative mood.  Meaning it is an action continuing by the subject “they” and into the future is a fact, again prophecy.  This is why they disdain the word, for it lays them bear.  Hebrews 4:12  This departure  is our fracture (earthquake) below the surface of the water from the foundation of the biblical doctrine.  This has caused these Three Waves, Pentecostal (of which I was in) Charismatic, & Third Wave which all share the phenomena of experience.  The word of God is for them incomplete and subjective to their personal dreams, visions & yup some of them have had Jesus come and visit and some have been to heaven regularly!

It is the shallow understanding of the sufficiency of God’s word that is causing this Tsunami of deceit to rush into many Churches today.  Breaching denominational barriers by design!  The Third Wave’s Dominion aspects has gained access in high places indeed. Looking to drape the American flag around the gospel. The NAR was even being touted by Oprah!  That is a Red Flag!  We will look at that New Age connection later.  How is it gaining access today?  It is through deceitful experiences.  Oh how it is very difficult to reason with someone who has had an experience.  We will also look at this spirit behind experience later. Emphasis on Experience

Listen to this: the thesis that ministry, that is experience precedes and produces theology not the reverse and so Wimber said, ‘John Wimber who is really you would have to say is behind this because C. Peter Wagner said Wimber was his mentor.  The late John Wimber.   He said we are

“cataloging all of our experiences so we can develop a theology.” -John Wimber

This has to be one of the most bizarre statements that definitively shows an amazing lack of discernment within these movements.  Using experience to catalog and then develop a theology?  Theology is the doctrine (study) of God.  It is about His word.  Originally in the Garden, Adam & Eve added to God’s word. Eve says to the Serpent, “…neither shall ye touch it” Genesis 3:3.  That’s not what God said!  God said in Genesis 2:16-17  “…thou shalt not eat of it.”  The basic tenets of error comes from a lack of understanding what God has said.

As John and his congregation, mostly made up of former Quakers, sought God in intimate worship, they experienced empowerment by the Holy Spirit, significant renewal in the gifts and conversion growth. It soon became clear that the church’s emphasis on the experience of the Holy Spirit was not shared by some leaders in the Calvary Chapel movement. In 1982, John’s church left Calvary Chapel and joined the Vineyard churches.  Vineyard USA

Experience and Syncretism The New Common Ground

If we look at our Vineyard movement we see how John Wimber made a space for ministry in between pentecostal Charismatics and non- charismatic evangelicals.  An experience and space between Protestants and Catholics.  That wasn’t by accident, it was from Wimber’s theological reflections.  We might not be a John Wimber, but we can take time to learn how and why our movement has practiced those things.  And it can give us confidence in how to do the same.  UK Vineyard Church

And if we reach back further to the early experienced based theology we see in the AG in 1914 the first results (First Wave).

“For a number of years, God has been leading men to seek for a full apostolic gospel standard of experience and doctrine.”  Opening statement from 1914, the American General Council of the Assemblies of God (Source)
The proofs, for them, that this is revival or a move of God are based on feelings, experiences, manifestations, subjective testimonies and zealous witnessing.(Source)

In our next several articles we will take a deeper look into the connections of the New Age, Syncretism, Rome, Occult, Church Growth, The Players, NAR, and we will contrast this faulty theology with what the bible clearly teaches.  You will see another Jesus, another gospel (2 Corinthians 11:4) and another eschatology that rivals the best Utopian dreamers ever.  There warped vision of the mission of the Church and swanky ideals cause a outright contempt and mockers of Jesus soon return for the Church.
