Part 2 of 5: The Fundamentals of our faith. The Deity of Jesus Christ. With a correct understanding of the Bible, we know we can look to Jesus Christ, our cornerstone. What does the bible say about Jesus Christ? Is He God… a lunatic or a liar? Without exception, all cults, isms, and liberals all find a way to deny the deity of Jesus Christ. It is our earnest desire that you learn the fundamentals of the faith and grow in grace and mercy. 2 Peter 3:18

Passages Describing the Coming Divine Messiah
- Isaiah 7:14 — The promised child is called Immanuel, meaning “God with us.”
The New Testament applies this prophecy to Jesus in Matthew 1:22–23. - Isaiah 9:6 — The promised Davidic ruler is given the names “Mighty God” and “Everlasting Father,” indicating more than ordinary human kingship.
- Isaiah 40:3 — “Prepare the way of the LORD.”
In context, the Hebrew name is Yahweh. The New Testament applies this passage to John the Baptist preparing the way for Jesus (Matthew 3:3; Mark 1:2–3). - Micah 5:2 — The ruler from Bethlehem has origins “from ancient days,” or “from the days of eternity.”
Christians understand this as pointing to the Messiah’s preexistence (Matthew 2:5–6). - Daniel 7:13–14 — The “Son of Man” comes with the clouds of heaven and receives everlasting dominion and universal worship or service.
Jesus repeatedly applies this title to Himself, especially in Matthew 26:63–66. - Psalm 45:6–7 — The king is addressed as “God” and receives an eternal throne.
Hebrews 1:8–9 directly applies this passage to the Son.
Old Testament passages about Yahweh applied to Jesus
- Psalm 102:25–27 — Yahweh is described as the unchanging Creator whose years never end.
Hebrews 1:10–12 applies these words to the Son. - Psalm 68:18 — Yahweh ascends on high and receives gifts.
Paul echoes and applies this imagery to Christ’s ascension in Ephesians 4:8–10. - Psalm 110:1 — David speaks of “my Lord” sitting at Yahweh’s right hand.
Jesus uses this passage to show that the Messiah is more than David’s descendant (Matthew 22:41–46). It also describes the Messiah sharing God’s royal authority. - Isaiah 6:1–10 — Isaiah sees Yahweh’s glory in the temple.
John 12:37–41 says Isaiah saw Jesus’ glory, connecting Jesus with the divine glory in Isaiah’s vision. - Isaiah 8:13–14 — Yahweh is the “sanctuary” and the “stone” over which people stumble.
Peter applies this imagery to Jesus in 1 Peter 2:7–8. - Joel 2:32 — “Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”
Paul applies this text to calling upon Jesus in Romans 10:9–13. - Isaiah 45:23 — Every knee will bow, and every tongue confess allegiance to Yahweh.
Paul applies this universal homage to Jesus in Philippians 2:9–11. - Zechariah 12:10 — Yahweh says, “They will look on me, on him whom they have pierced.”
John connects this prophecy with Jesus’ crucifixion in John 19:34–37.
The Angel of the LORD
Several Old Testament passages describe the Angel of the LORD as distinct from God yet speaking as God and receiving divine honor:
- Genesis 16:7–13 — The Angel of the LORD speaks to Hagar, and Hagar identifies God as the one who spoke to her.
- Genesis 22:11–18 — The Angel of the LORD speaks as God and renews God’s covenant promise to Abraham.
- Exodus 3:2–6 — The Angel of the LORD appears in the burning bush, yet the speaker is also called God and Yahweh.
- Judges 6:11–24 — The Angel of the LORD appears to Gideon, who fears that he has seen Yahweh.
- Judges 13:18–22 — Manoah says, “We shall surely die, for we have seen God,” after encountering the Angel of the LORD.
Many early Christian interpreters understood these appearances as pre-incarnate appearances of Christ, though the Old Testament itself does not explicitly identify the Angel of the LORD as Jesus. (Christophony)
Other important allusions to Jesus Deity
- Genesis 18:1–33 — Yahweh appears to Abraham in human form and speaks with him.
- Exodus 23:20–21 — God sends a divine messenger in whom God’s own name is present and who has authority to forgive or withhold transgression.
- Proverbs 8:22–31 — Wisdom is personified as existing with God before creation. Christians have often viewed this as an anticipation of Christ, though the passage directly personifies divine wisdom rather than explicitly naming the Messiah.
- Daniel 3:25 — The fourth figure in the fiery furnace is described as resembling “a son of the gods”; some Christian traditions see this as a Christophany, though the text itself does not identify him as Jesus.
- Psalm 2:7–12 — The Messiah is called God’s “Son,” receives the nations as His inheritance, and is the refuge of all who trust in Him. The New Testament applies this psalm to Jesus in Acts 4:25–28, Hebrews 1:5, and Revelation 2:26–27.
Taken together, the strongest Old Testament foundations for Jesus’ deity are Isaiah 9:6, Psalm 45:6–7, Psalm 102:25–27, Isaiah 40:3, Daniel 7:13–14, Psalm 110:1, and the divine appearances of the Angel of the LORD. The New Testament’s repeated application of passages about Yahweh to Jesus is especially significant for the Christian doctrine that Jesus shares the divine identity.
