Part 3 of 5: The Fundamentals of our faith. The Substitutionary Death of Jesus: Christ Jesus died for our sins in His own blood, at the Cross of Christ. With a correct understanding of the Bible, we know we can look to Jesus Christ, our Passover Lamb. Today we look at Christ’s substitutionary death on the cross. This is another crucial element of the Christian faith. It is our earnest desire that you learn the fundamentals of the faith and grow in grace and mercy.

Scriptures on the substitutionary death of Jesus Christ—that He died in the place of sinners, bearing the judgment our sins deserved.

  • Leviticus 16:20–22 — The scapegoat symbolically bears Israel’s sins and is sent away.
  • Genesis 22:7–14 — God provides a ram in the place of Isaac.
  • Exodus 12:5–13 — The Passover lamb dies so the firstborn may live.

A concise summary is 1 Peter 3:18: “Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God.”

The substitutionary death of Jesus is the fundamental Christian doctrine that Christ, though sinless, willingly died in the place of sinners. He bore the judgment and punishment our sins deserved, satisfying divine justice and making forgiveness, reconciliation with God, and eternal life available to all who believe in Him. No better example is found in Genesis 22:1-14, the Akedah typologically in Abraham (The Father offering up his son Isaac). See Typology
